Here’s an update shared by FIAKS community member- ‘If your smartphone has remote desktop apps like TeamViewer, AnyDesk and Zoom installed then you will not be able to use the online payment app’.  Now here’s a set of relevant questions that come up:

Question 1: Does the uninstalling of the above apps will make online payment experience through mobile handset be safe and does it assure customers that now no one can hack the instrument?

Question 2: Is it so that only these three apps stated above are unsafe amongst thousands of app in the play store?

Question 3: Why all banks are not making the online experience of their customers safe and free from any possible hack?

  • Community member says “Isn’t this like giving a car to the driver and expecting that car manufacturer to guarantee that no accidents will ever happen?” How can such assurances be provided?.  Another member agreed however raised a question that what happens if the car has a faulty engine that can lead to an accident. In case of the payment and banking apps shouldn’t this ownership be taken by the company?
  • Well, Zoom, which is a very popular app for conferencing, can be considered to be relatively safe. On the other hand, TeamViewer and Anydesk take control of your mobile system from remote and is not safe at all. These are usually used by IT folks for debugging (which is a process of detecting and removing errors from computer software and hardware), but can be misused by fraudsters.
  • Secondly, isn’t this scary how does this payment app figure out if any RDP (Remote Desktop Application) Apps are there on the phone? [To be noted here is Remote Desktop Apps are software that allows users to access and connect to a remote computer or host computer in another location.]
  • Does this Payment app look for specific apps on the phone or for permissions granted to all apps and then figures out?
  • Well, either way, it needs to have privileged information, which should not be available to any other app. This will give a false sense of security to the user. And if a similar malicious app is downloaded, just think of the consequences.
