“When my details first appeared on a random taxi driver’s phone I was extremely hassled! Subsequently, I learned that one or more of my friends have shared their phonebook with Truecaller in return for getting information about other strangers.” We all are familiar with ‘Truecaller’ mobile application that was made by a Swedish company by the name of True Software Scandinavia AB and I’m sure we’ve tried to use it at least a couple of times to search the names of the unknown numbers that call or text us. What Truecaller allows users to do is to block spam numbers, search for caller identification details, SMS, chats, calls, call recording, bill payments and recharges, etc
All of this seems like a great choice of options to put into one single app but it has raised significant issues as to whether or not it is deemed SAFE to provide the information of people just through one search. One of the FIAKS community member raised a similar question, he goes on to say that “If you enter any random 10 digits valid mobile number on the search bar of Trecaller the following details appear
- Name of the person
- Photograph of the person
- Location, city
- Email ID
- Phone number (already entered in search)
- through this, one can easily get more details of the person by doing a basic search on Facebook and other social media.
Isn’t this a big Violation of Data Privacy? ”
