The FIAKS community had a lively discussion about 5G and Cloud Computing. One of the members believed that 5G and its potential to the world was amazing and beyond imagination. He predicted that computing will shift completely from cloud to connected devices.
An article on 5G – 5G will bring cloud computing to everyone – aptly explains the concept of 5G and its impact. Below is the extract from the article –
5G is the fifth generation of cellular mobile communications, preceded by 4G (LTE/WiMax), 3G (UMTS), and 2G (GSM) systems. 5G advantages include high data-throughput rates, reduced latency, energy savings, cost reduction, greater system capacity, and massive simultaneous device connectivity, at a practical cost.
It’ll be a while before 5G comes to a tower near you, but it promises low-cost, low-latency high-speed internet for all, no matter where you live or have a business. This is the missing link for many people and businesses when it comes to using cloud computing.
What is Cloud Computing?
In the simplest terms, cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer’s hard drive. The cloud is just a metaphor for the Internet. It goes back to the days of flowcharts and presentations that would represent the gigantic server-farm infrastructure of the Internet as nothing but a puffy, white cumulus cloud, accepting connections and doling out information as it floats. (An extract from “What Is Cloud Computing?”)
So basically, storing information, and processing data over the internet in a cloud platform is Cloud Computing. Most of us store our photos an files in Google Drive and Dropbox that can be opened in another device to access the same files. This is an example of a cloud.
A member of the community doubts that computing will shift with 5G. Some of the reasons are that the device’s hardware, battery, etc. are still in limitation. Maybe with wireless charging, cheap solar, and advances in hardware and battery will tip that scale. But 5G by itself is not going to be enough to completely shift computing.
An expert points out that all loT devices will be connected to the cloud. Then he questions the previous member by asking – So the connection between two devices can’t happen without the cloud in between? The response from a community member was that even for a machine to machine connection, for central monitoring, a cloud will be always needed. Another member adds that 5G is the only connection where you require monitoring, integration and auditing services which have to be run in the cloud-based micro-architecture services.
