On the grounds of national security, India made a move and banned 59 Chinese mobile applications. Thereupon the questions raised up in the community were;

  • Does this mean downloads will be blocked?

                               OR

  • The traffic of these apps will be filtered?

                               OR

  • Suppose say if a person is an existing customer of TikTok or any of these 59 apps then what happens, he/she can’t access it?

                               OR

  • If today you try to download TikTok or any of these 59 apps then it will not allow you to download?

Now let’s understand how this will work out?

  • Well, the users who already have these apps downloaded on their mobile would not be able to access it further. Also, existing apps won’t get updates.
  • Initially, the government issued a press release. These apps will eventually be banned. This is generally followed by orders to stores and ISPs. CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) and MEITY would likely be issuing orders to Apple and Google to bring down these Apps. This has been seen happening in the past for a specific app; although never for such a long list. Well, TikTok has already been removed from Google Play and the App store [1]
  • To be clear, the government could do two things- ban new downloads/updates, secondly blacklist ports/IPs so that users who may already have the app may not be able to access content on these apps. However, the ISPs sometimes don’t really do a great job of blocking as the blocked sites come up with mirror sites that are usually open. So once the government issues the formal order, the apps will not be available for download in India.
  • A member made a conjecture, “You won’t be allowed to download any app on an Indian ISP(Internet Service Provider). I guess if you set up a VPN and logged in from another country it would still work – that’s how folks in the Middle East use VoIP (Voice over IP Call) calling.”
  • Another member contradicts the above conjecture by stating that, “It’s not just the VPN that connects with app downloads. On Appstore, there is a concept of a country. If your account is set-up for India, and if the Government asks Apple/Google to remove, irrespective of the VPN country, one would not see these apps for downloads on the India store.”
