The FIAKS community discusses if WhatsApp should be allowed to advertise or not. A standing member starts off the discussion by asking what is wrong if they advertise. They do need to generate revenues.
A member brings up a slightly different approach where there’s a subscription model. A lot of folks will pay for a great product – Whatsapp. Like it used to require ₹99 in the beginning. So far the community members feel that subscription and ads are both ok. A member adds that hybrid is even better. People can make in-app purchases to remove ads if they like. Or else they can use this product for free with the ads.
A fellow member of the community feels that this is the same thing that is wrong with Facebook. They need to show maturity in handling our data and sharing it with others.
An argument against that statement was that customers have volunteered to give information here. The expectation is that the companies should take explicit permission by popping up specific clauses and not by hiding such things in 8 size font in terms and conditions of 10 pages that most people don’t even check.
A member protests saying that there are cleaner ways to serve ads. Explicit clear blocker consent. They should ask people if they are okay for WhatsApp reading keywords to surface contextual ads. People should have an option to say no or to opt out.
