In the community, a member said that “When I make a call from Airtel or Vodafone what I’ve realized is that the quality of calls is really poor, there’s frequent call dropping taking place. Hence these days I make calls on WhatsApp and I’m surprised as to how the call quality is so clear. WhatsApp rides on huge infrastructure investments built by a telecom network and they’re absolutely free, How? What kind of innovation is this in which Telecom companies are made to bleed and WhatsApp which is riding on telco network is offering Free Calls and Messaging? Isn’t something incorrect here? Can Whatsapp offer services without telecommunication Network?”
He also says “When I went to Vietnam, I purchased a SIM for 150,000 VND ($7) without an ID or even an Address proof document, later on returning to India I used the same Vietnamese SIM card and with Wi-Fi connection I could easily make calls to my friend who lived in Pakistan using WhatsApp” the question that comes to our mind is that isn’t something seriously wrong here? For example what if the same SIM issued in Vietnam with No Identity proof was used for TERROR Activities? Will anyone ever be able to guess where and how these calls were made?
National Security Risk, in the case of Vietnam, issued SIM getting misused is a real issue that needs to be addressed by the GSMA. Most countries have strict rules regarding KYC but there are other countries that don’t, also as WhatsApp is completely encrypted no data is available with regulators in any country. Over and above Facebook and its partners are launching LIBRA Cryptocurrency to open up parallel digital currencies and in India we are enabling UPI payments through WhatsApp which is in its beta phase for millions of customers for more than a year, the question here is Do regulators understand the kind of risk various countries are getting exposed to or will get exposed to at a future date? Honestly, we’re running the risk of National Security here. On the other hand, people are also using Viber to run on the data network and they’re probably getting noticed or even recorded. Jio is also giving Jio users a number of data call on JioFi & Giga Fiber so let’s hope TRAI is reviewing it.
