Research found 72pc of Irish people are in favour of rewarding whistleblowers. Payouts to whistleblowers in the US have topped $1bn (€870m). Most people believe incentivised whistleblowing will make it easier to get to the bottom of wrongdoing in banks, insurers and other financial firms.

The Central Bank has identified more than 40,000 affected customers with the tracker mortgage scandal alone, while thousands of people lost most of their pension savings in the Custom House Capital scandal here.
