The deal comes just seven months after Visa paid a reported $250m (£192m) for Earthport, a payment services business, in which Visa’s rival Mastercard had also been interested.

Mastercard itself has also been active in the fintech space in recent years, shelling out £700m in 2017 for Vocalink, a payments technology company previously owned by a consortium of banks including Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays, HSBC and Royal Bank of Scotland.
