This new technology uses Google Pay on the Android operating system. It means that Android users won’t need to carry a separate Myki card and will be able to top up anytime via an app on your phone when funds run low.

Users can tap their phones on the existing Myki gates and readers on Melbourne’s trams, buses and at train stations. You’ll still be able to travel with your existing full fare, concession, child or senior Myki and use both Myki Money and Myki Pass.

The news comes after a seven-month trial period of the new technology. The Victorian government has said that discussions are still ongoing to make mobile Myki available on other smartphone platforms (but considering Apple’s track record… this could take a while).
