Devices from Asus, AVM, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, TP-Link and Zyxel were tested. According to the researchers, all tested devices were actively advertised by the manufacturers at the time of the tests, so they can be considered new enough to be actively supported with updates. The Frauenhofer researchers are most critical of devices from D-Link, Linksys, TP-Link and Zyxel. Devices from Huawei were not tested because the manufacturer does not make its firmware publicly available – whether or not you want a device with such a non-transparent update policy at home remains to be seen
Not all of the researchers’ results can be transferred directly to the devices that are actually in use on the market. This is because many devices that are at home with customers of Internet providers have their own branding from the provider and some have their own firmware versions in use. These usually do not exactly match the firmware that the corresponding manufacturer provides for the basic device on its website.
