“The industry of venture investing is really old and quite conservative and traditional,” Landgren said. “And we saw that there are opportunities in the modern cloud-based approach.” Each of these firms had to build its AI capability from the ground up. For EQT Ventures, that meant addressing the obvious need for strong data sources, as well as the less obvious need to rethink the way the firm operated daily to fully leverage Motherbrain.
On the data side, Landgren acknowledges that the first two years involved a lot of iterating. EQT Ventures tapped into third-party databases, and it created a process for scraping data and images from startups’ websites. It now draws on about 40 sources of data.
